List of Plant Species - Alphabetical by English Name

Wavy Stock Dark Loosestrife Giant Fennel Horseshoe Bee Orchid

Using the lists

This list uses Strid (2016a) as a base list for species that have been reliably recorded on the island of Lesvos. In addition to plants recorded in the wild, the list also includes a number of commonly seen, introduced species, as it is often of interest to visitors to know what these might be. Such plants include the more frequently seen crop plants, street trees and plants regularly appearing in hotel gardens and other public spaces. The taxonomy follows the decisions published on Plants of the World Online, a website managed by Kew Gardens, in association with a consortium of other botanical faculties. English names of plants have always been fraught, with new names seemingly invented on a regular basis, at the whim of individuals. This lists attempts to use names that are already in widespread usage and which have, largely been so for a considerable time. English names don't exist for many plant species in regions where English is not the first language, so some common sense is needed in attempting to gradually work towards a consensus.

As a quick short cut for users, this page contains a list of all the plant species that are included in this identification guide. If you are wanting to check a particular species, simply locate it on the list here; clicking on the name will take you straight to it.

Note: A quick way to find a species in the list is to use the find feature on your keyboard (control + F) and type in part of the name. On an Android phone, you can touch the menu bar at the bottom of the screen (drag down to get this menu to show), select 'Find on page' then begin typing the name you require - the screen will jump to your selection. On an iphone, you will need a somewhat more complicated process; touch the url box at the top of the screen and the keyboard will appear; start to type in the search name you require and you will be offered a list of search options; scroll down these options to the bottom and select 'on this page'. The phone will now search for your selection on the page and you can find your required species.
