Canary Islands Date Palm      Phoenix canariensis

Native to the Canary Islands. Occasionally planted for garden ornament. This species is currently suffering heavily from attack by the introduced Red Palm Weevil Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, a highly invasive beetle from South-east Asia. Beetle larvae feed in the crown of the palm and the trees are often killed completely, with signs of infestation often not apparent until it is too late to sace the tree. Currently, California Fam Palms appear to be either resistant or not favoured by the beetles.
