Yellow Vetchling      Lathyrus aphaca

Native from Macaronesia eastwards through the Mediterranean, southern Europe and western Asia to India. A strange plant with the leaves reduced to simple tendrils and the leaf stipules greatly enlarged to perform the function of leaves. Each leaf base has two stipules, giving the effect of leaves in opposite pairs.

Annual Pea      Lathyrus annuus

(Fodder Pea) Native from Macaronesia eastwards through the Mediterranean Region to western Asia. Leaves are pinnate but reduced to just a single pair of narrow, linear leaflets, each leaf then having extensive tendrils at the tip which are used for climbing. The leaf stipules are small with two, linear lobes. The stems are strongly flattened and winged.

Hairy Vetchling      Lathyrus hirsutus

Native throughout most of Europe and the Mediterranean region eastwards to Pakistan. A scrambling climber to one metre in length but often shorter. The flowers are purple with paler, bluish wings, carried in a loose cluster of 1-8, the cluster appearing on the end of a long, slender stalk. Leaves with one pair of narrow, upright leafets and ending in a forked tendril. Most easily told from other peas by its hairy seed pods.

Native through southern Europe and the Mediterranean Region, eastwards to Pakistan. Stems narrowly winged. Leaves with a single (-2) pair of linear-lanceolate leaflets; tendrils usually branched; stipules semi-sagittate. Pedicel 10-30mm long; calyx teeth triangular-lanceolate, much longer than calyx tube. Seed pod with two keels along the back and with 2-6 seeds.

Brown Vetchling      Lathyrus setifolius

Native from Macaronesia eastwards through the Mediterranean Region to the Caucasus. Stems narrowly winged. Leaves with a single pair of linear leaflets; tendrils simple or usually branched. Pedicel long, short aristate; calyx teeth triangular-acuminate, about as long as calyx tube. Seed pod distinctly stalked, reticulate-veined with 2-4 seeds.

Native through southern and eastern Europe and the Mediterranean Region, eastwards to India and south through East Africa. Plant slender. Stems angular but not winged. Leaves with a single (-2) pair of linear, parallel-veined leaflets; tendrils usually simple. Pedicel much shorter than leaves, aristate; calyx teeth about as long as calyx tube. Seed pod slender, linear, parallel-veined with 8-15 seeds.
