Meadow Foams
What are they?
The meadow-foams form their own family, the Limnanthaceae, a small group of around eight species, native to North America. They are low-growing, annuals and some species are popular as garden bedding plants.
Where are they found?
Popular as garden plants and most likely to be found as short-lived annuals on disturbed ground close to gardens and houses.
Identification
One species in this family is commonly grown in gardens and may be found as a garden escape. The combination of finely-cut leaves and white-and-yellow flowers is easily recognised.
Common Meadow-foam Limnanthes douglasii
Introduced from North America as a garden plant and occasionally found as a short-lived annual where garden waste may have been dumped. Flowers June to September. The white-edged, yellow-centred flowers are distinctive and often earn the plant the name of 'Poached Egg Plant'.
